What do I have to do to obtain a birth number?
The Police of the Czech Republic (Alien Police Inspectorate competent for the place of residence of the foreign national concerned) will assign a birth number to a national of the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland or his/her family member, who has been granted a confirmation about a temporary residence in the Czech Republic or temporary or permanent residence.
A third-country national is assigned a birth number by the Police of the Czech Republic (Alien Police Inspectorate competent for the place of residence of the foreign national concerned) in the case that he/she stays in the Czech Republic on the basis of a long-stay visa (visa for a stay over 90 days), is in possession of a long-term or permanent residence in the Czech Republic, or that he/she was granted asylum or subsidiary protection in the Czech Republic. The date on which residence was permitted is not decisive for the procedure of the Alien Police. No special documents or data are required for the birth number which is to be assigned by the Alien Police.
If a foreign national is not a holder of any above stated residence permits he/she may apply for a birth number at the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic (Unit for Birth Numbers of the Administrative Activities Department). The Ministry of the Interior will grant a birth number also to a third-country national who has been granted asylum or subsidiary protection in the Czech Republic in line with the Asylum Act.
